FAQs

How can I get involved?

Reach out to us! Send us your ideas, passions, prose, ramblings. We are receptive to anything and everything. More formally, you can donate funds or occasionally, your time. We are in a planning and fundraising phase, so there isn’t a lot to physically do in terms of land stewardship.

What is a forb?

A forb is a herbaceous flowering plant which is not a grass. We use this term in ecology, and it makes for the perfect title of our prairie restoration project.

Are you converting every Illinois farm into prairie?

No, that’s not necessarily the plan. Our target farms are those whose usage is not beneficial to ecological systems, human and non-human. We acknowledge that human existence requires that we use a substantial amount of land for our benefit, but we aim to do so more sustainably. In short, we intend to convert land to prairie in tandem with performing biointensive regenerative agriculture.

Is coffee a bean?

Not technically. The coffee plant actually produces little cherries that you pick throughout the ripening season. These cherries will turn a deep red, almost burgundy color, at which point you will pick them. After that you need to carefully remove the five outer fruit layers before getting down to the seed — or bean, as we know it. Now you are ready to roast the coffee and drink it!

Why is this a non-profit?

We believe that this work is inherently virtuous and requires no profit, nor praise; in fact, our goal is that the entire system benefits from our work, not just us.

I can’t donate any funds or time, how else can I help?
